The Four “Must-Haves” for Content on Your Firm’s Website

You may or may not have heard the term “thought leadership.” It is basically a term that refers to the creation of content both online and offline to show your audience (wherever they are) that you have specialized knowledge in a particular field and that you are a leader with regard to the concepts and important issues related to that field.

When marketing a law practice in the digital world, thought leadership typically comes in the form of informative articles or blogs that discuss a specific topic in some detail. Without being too self-referential, this article itself is a kind of thought leadership on the issue of marketing your law practice online.

The goal with “thought leadership” articles and blogs is that eventually over time, your website will have a large number of blogs that are informative for users who come to your site. Based on the information provided, and the trust and goodwill developed through the content in those articles, you can convince a potential client to become a paying client. Moreover, you want to be sure to include important keywords in your articles and blogs so that users will be able to find your content when they run a search engine inquiry. In other words, you want to make sure your content has SEO – search engine optimization.

Now, the important matter when marketing your law practice with thought leadership articles is that virtually everyone else is doing it .  So, the real question is how to differentiate your firm from the rest. That is where our four “must-haves” come into play.

In this article, we will talk about the four vital components you need to make your thought leadership articles or blogs rise above the rest. 1. Titles that Grab the Reader

When you send marketing emails or publish a blog on your website, you want your audience to open the email, or read the article. How do you do that?  You do that with a title that compels the reader to learn more – hopefully with a promise that the reader will learn something quickly.

That is why lists can be compelling. The title of this piece, for example, is the “Four ‘Must Haves,’” which conveys both that the reader would benefit from knowing what “must” be in their content, and that there are only four takeaways – an easily digestible amount for a quick read. Another tactic is to ask a question, that pulls the reader in get the answer to that question posed.

2.  Clear Intros

An introduction that gets to the point and tells the reader what he or she will get out of the article is crucial. As they say, you don’t want to “bury the lede.” In other words, don’t force your reader to get to the bottom of the article before giving the information of value.  Lead with the kind of value you’ll be providing from the get-go.

3. Add Value – Don’t Copy Statutes

There are so many law firm websites out there that literally cut and paste a piece of legislation into blog, which little extra information to help the reader.  Bad idea.

Thought leadership means that you are giving your reader a clear, simple, and concise, description of a complex legal matter. Also, you are taking that description – whether it is a case or piece of legislation – and explaining why it is important, and what your reader can take away with that information. Just stating the law verbatim is not helpful at all.

4. Make it Readable

There are two aspects to readability. First, avoid highly formal or legal language. Your thought leadership content should be explained in the article as if you are briefly explaining the concept to a friend or new client. Second, use short sentences, short paragraphs, and lots of subheadings to make it easy to read. For example, if you were just skimming this article, you would know right away what the “Four ‘Must-Haves’” were.

We hope these tips help, and that you incorporate them into all of your thought leadership articles.
